The Third Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel is formed by lay people who, in response to a call from God promise to live the Gospel in the spirit of the Carmelite Order and under its guidance. The Third Order, or Secular Carmelite Order comprises both lay people, and secular clergy, who find in the Carmelite charism their spiritual home which animates their own spiritual life and their mission in the Church and the world. Enrollment in the Third Order requires a period of spiritual formation in the values of the Carmelite Order which culminates in the Perpetual Profession according to Rule of Life. Profession in the Third Order can include consecration to God through the promise of the evangelical counsels of chastity and obedience according to one’s state in life.
